The word assurance means a promise or guarantee that gives someone confidence. For example, when someone says, “Let me assure you, I’ll be there on time,” they’re offering their word as something solid you can count on.
In John 3:16, God offers His assurance: anyone—no matter their past—who believes in Jesus will not perish but will have eternal life. Not “might have,” not “hopefully will have”—but will have. That’s a divine promise.
Now imagine this: If you were to die tonight, do you think God would welcome you into heaven? Many people—especially believers—might feel unsure. They think they need to be “good enough” or “sinless” to be accepted.
But what does Jesus say in John 3:16? He doesn’t say, “Whoever is perfect,” or “Whoever has never failed.” He says, “Whoever believes in Him.”
That’s the key to assurance: not trusting in your performance, but in God’s promise.
